Location (City, State, Country):

Commitment:
To create awareness among the local residents of the touristic destination known as Akumal located in the Riviera Maya, Mexico. Our coast are impacted by the effects of climate change and for Akumal is very important to consider any mitigation and adaptation action that may allow the local residents to cope with its effects and love in a more sustainable environment. The planned activities is to conform small working groups or committees of neighbors who will be trained in environmental topics in order to get involved in decision taking to a neighborhood level. This will take place for both the Spanish and English speaking communities but with special attention to those involved in the tourist sector. During April 2021 we plan to conform at least three working groups of about 5 people each with structures conformed and decided by themselves. The training, either in person (if the health authorities allow us) or via zoom will consist in: - knowledge of the local environment, history and culture - How the local community is built - Protection and conservation policies in Akumal (ie. protected areas and no fish zone) - What is climate change, global and local context - General adaptation measures and local potential measures - installation of the working groups, structure - Work plan and commitments - Follow up - Future
Commitment Impact:
To create at least three working groups or local residents who may acquire knowledge on environmental topics, aware of climate change, be support for our studies and programs and by spreading the word among other residents of this tourist destination of the Mexican Caribbean.
